Selenium is a nutrient found naturally in soil, water, certain foods, and plays a huge role in metabolism. But, along with helping us keep that weight off, Selenium plays many other key roles in keeping us healthy…
According to the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements, Selenium may help fight against the following health issues:
1. Promotes Healthy Vision
Selenium helps the body absorb Vitamin E, which is critical to healthy vision. According to the Boston Foundation for Sight,“…vitamin E reduces the risk of age-related eye health issues. Selenium may help to slow the progression of eye symptoms related to Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition affecting the thyroid.”
2. Protects Against Cancer
In selenium and cancer prevention studies, “compared with the lowest category of selenium intake, the highest intake category had a 31% lower cancer risk and 45% lower cancer mortality risk as well as a 33% lower risk of bladder cancer and, in men, 22% lower risk of prostate cancer.”
3. Protects Against Heart Disease
It is believed that Selenium may help reduce inflammation in the heart and helps prevent the oxidative modification of lipids, which in turn could help prevent cardiovascular disease or deaths associated with cardiovascular disease, according to the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements.
4. Promotes Thyroid Health
According to the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements, “Selenium concentration is higher in the thyroid gland than in any other organ in the body, and, like iodine, selenium has important functions in thyroid hormone synthesis and metabolism.” Because of this, it is very important to keep Selenium levels up to keep the thyroid healthy.
