Eye health: 3 Common Signs of Age-Related Eye Health Issues

Imagine a time when you started to feel sick and feverish. The symptoms can range from feeling achy, to your face being flushed and hot. Just like how you feel an onset sickness attacking your body, signs of eye health issues can also be noticed.

Signs of age-related eye health issues vary, but are always worth taking note of, as age-related eye health issues are the leading cause of vision loss for those over the age of 50. Here are a few of the well-known signs of deteriorating eye health.

  1. Distorted Lines- If straight lines appear distorted or wavy, it could be a sign of age-related eye health issues. These issues can affect the macula, the part of your retina that is responsible for central vision where the eye’s acuity is sharpest.
  2. A Blind Spot- Often those with age-related eye health issues notice that a blind spot develops, or an empty area in the center of their vision. As age-related eye health issues progress, a blurred area near the center of vision is a common symptom. Over time, the blurred area may grow larger or you may develop blank spots in your central vision. Objects also may not appear to be as bright as they used to be.
  3. Diminished Color- Colors may seem duller, and contrast between colors will seem less noticeable. It may also become difficult to tell where an object ends and where its background begins, making it difficult to see curbs or steps.

Although most age-related eye health issues can't be cured, it is possible to mitigate the progression of deteriorating vision through taking an eye vitamin with dietary zeaxanthin. Studies show that zeaxanthin increases low macular pigment levels – a leading risk factor for age-related eye health issues.

Regular eye examinations and early diagnosis and treatment of age-related eye health issues can help you continue to optimize your eye health and preserve good vision throughout life.
